Day 6: Today's Media

Hello Stranger,

I'm so happy I don't have an exam today. Gives me more time for my blog. Actually, I'm supposed to be still in bed right now but my mom woke me up and told me that she's going out, that'd mean I'm going to be alone in the house because my dad and my brother's gone to work. My eyes are still sore. But I'll endure anything for my blog. Yes, yes. I told you I have no life. Time for a coffee.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't sure how to start writing about 'The Media'. There's just so many things about it that really get to me, and most of it I can't even explain. Frustrating? I think so. But if I were asked what I personally think of the media, I wouldn't really say I'm against it, but I'm not happy with some of the things they do. What do I mean by "some of the things they do"? Well, if I asked you, what do you think of the media? Do you find the question as hard as I do? Or do you not care? Anything you answer is fair enough, I asked you anyway.

Okay, here's what I think. I think the media's a REALLY BIG influence to everyone. And by influence I mean good and bad. Let's start with the good stuff. No, let's start with the bad stuff. Has it ever crossed your mind that the media might just be the worst influence there is? Think of the things it does. It's really the image they portray. Get the picture now? They show things that are too good to be real. And I'm saying this about every aspect. Think about advertisements, some of the dramas/programmes, don't you ever wonder why almost every character is good-looking? Not that there's anything bad about that, I mean, good-looking characters really spice up the drama for some of us. But it just adds up to the idea of the media's unrealistic habit.

So I was thinking, and this new idea came to me just now. I figured it's like a 'Mary-Go-Round' thing. The media doesn't make dramas about not-so-perfect people because in a way it's also as unrealistic as having almost-perfect characters. There are hardly any dramas about someone falling in love with a completely imperfect person. I could think of some movies, and keeping 'Ugly Betty' in mind. But did it end there? Yes. It more or less, pretty much did. Why would dramas about not-so-perfect people be unrealistic? Because no matter what we do it's really quite hard to think that it's actually going to happen in real life. And why is that? We go back to the media. To the influence they've given to people. The image they've convinced most of us to believe as the 'ideal' image. Does my theory make sense?  Here: (1) the media portrays unrealistic images with almost-perfect people, (2) influence the audience, (3) they don't/hardly/try to use not-so-perfect images, (4) it would still appear to be unrealistic, (5) we go back to their influence. Yes? Well, it made much more sense in my head.

And what is this about 'vampires'? Yes, I'm talking about 'Twilight'. However "hot" you think Robert Pattinson is (a.k.a. 'Edward Cullen'), vampires still don't and never did sparkle. Just imagine how 'Dracula', the real vampire, feels. But then again, I can't really say I'm unbiased here. I'd say wizards and witches, yes, 'Harry Potter', could also be unrealistic but with no doubt, 'Harry Potter' beats 'Twilight' hands down. Besides, Robert Pattinson was in 'Harry Potter' first as 'Cedric Diggory'. I could go on about this for forever, but I think I'll save it for later.

Now we come down to the very few, but are good things all the same, 'good things' about the media. So the media makes dramas or shows with almost-perfect characters. They do however, most of the time, give a somewhat good portrayal of what 'life' is. It's not perfect, full of tears, laughter, confusion, and things we are yet to discover. It's a good thing that they at least make dramas with gay people involved. And besides, the media provides a great deal of amusement to us. I just wish people didn't get so caught up and influenced. Just think of the future generations, I don't even want to get started. It doesn't have to be like the way it is now, always remember to stick to what you believe is right. Really.
